Multimedia Labs
The Office of Student Computing
Resources (OSCR) provides four
multimedia computer labs located around
campus. These multimedia
labs are places where UA students,
faculty and staff from any department or
college can go to develop multimedia
projects for instruction and class work
at no charge. Please see the
individual lab websites for a full list
of available hardware and software
tools.
Our multimedia location workstations are a mix of Macintosh and Windows computers. You'll find every sort of multimedia application here: programs to create 3D animations, virtual reality, complex websites, digital video movies, graphic designs and digital audio compositions, including the very high-end packages used today in Hollywood. The multimedia labs are staffed with knowledgable fulltime staff and student multimedia consultants. The labs are also home to many workshops. We offer more than 125 multimedia workshops a year that are free and open to all UA students, faculty and staff. We also take suggestions for workshops! Make your wishes known for a tool-a-hoops (a 1 hour demonstration), or our regular workshops, on the Contact Us page. Multimedia Learning Lab (MLL) (520) 621-9404 MapLocated in the Computer Center, room 303, the Multimedia Learning Lab is OSCR's flagship multimedia location. If you need assistance with your multimedia projects, the MLL has staff on duty to help you every step of the way. Faculty and Graduate Assistant Teachers: The MLL is available for reservation as a teaching classroom or as a multimedia lab for student class work. You can also request multimedia workshops for your students throughout the semester. Students: All students are welcome in the MLL. To gain access to the MLL, you must first self-sponsor. You can begin reserving time on MLL workstations immediately afterwards by calling 621-9404 or visiting the MLL in CC room 303. Gear-to-Go: The MLL has excellent multimedia gear available for checkout to all UA faculty and to those students who have received faculty-sponsorship for the current semester. We have digital video cameras, portable DAT drives, tripods, wireless microphones, and digital still image cameras. Gear-to-Go can be checked out for a maximum of 48 hours. Specialty peripherals: If you need to convert your slides to computer images, convert your computer images to slides, turn your VHS or mini-dv tapes into DVDs, print out in large format, or scan large format images, the MLL is available to assist you with its specialty peripherals. We also have a wonderful digital audio/midi sound room with all the software and hardware you could wish for. Multimedia Zone (MZ) (520) 626-3993 MapLocated in the ILC Information Commons the Multimedia Zone is home to the UA's newest and hottest multimedia-development workstations. Here you'll find high-end multiprocessor Macintosh and Windows workstations loaded with the best programs available to create 3D animations, virtual reality spaces, digital video movies, and digital audio compositions. All workstations are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Semester-long disk space is available is for class projects. The Multimedia Zone is open the same hours as the Information Commons in the Integrated Learning Center. MZ Hours MZ DetailsMultimedia Classroom (520) 626-5274 MapLocated in the Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering Building, room s314, the multimedia classroom is a computer lab specifically designed with multimedia classes in mind. There are 31 iMac Macintosh workstations arranged in a traditional classroom configuration. The instructor workstation is connected to a LCD projector and sound system, and is configured exactly the same as the student workstations. A number of classes are held in the Multimedia Classroom all semester long, and many instructors reserve the classroom for specific occasions. The annex supports campus instructional and research endeavors. Semester-long disk space is available for class projects. Object movies are created when objects are photographically captured and turned into interactive computer objects that can be experienced three-dimensionally and shared without the original objects actually being handled. Several UA classes are using object movies so that students and researchers can gain virtual access to precious or fragile items that they would normally never be able to physically access. Panorama movies are created when real-world spaces are captured photographically and turned into worlds that can be navigated and explored on a computer. Panoramas are invaluable to students and researchers who wish to virtually visit places normally impractical or impossible to visit in person. The VR Annex is open from 11 am to 5 pm Monday thru Friday. Annex staff, resources, and virtual reality training are available by reservation only. VR Annex Hours VR Annex Details |
