Student Technology Preceptor Program

Faculty Information and Requirements

Do you ...

* want to use the technology in your classroom, but want some help?
* have ideas for a class web page, but don't know how to implement them?
* want your students to work electronically, but need someone to help them?
* want to create digital instructional materials for your class, but don't have time to do it yourself?

Student Technology Preceptors (STPs) are students trained in the use of technology to support instruction. They receive upper division academic credit for attending regular workshops to develop technology and people skills and for assisting faculty with their technology needs. This program offers participating students training and experience in the use of instructional technology. It offers faculty ready access to students with the expertise to help them bring technology to their classes more efficiently and effectively than they could on their own.

There are two types of Student Technology Preceptors:

  • Faculty Class Preceptors work with a particular faculty member to support that instructor's use of technology in a particular class (the STP might be a member of the class). Faculty Class Preceptors sign up for one semester for 3 units of academic credit that can be repeated for up to 9 units. These students enroll in UNVR 397W.

  • Technology Center Preceptors make a two-semester commitment for 6 units of credit. After a semester of in-depth training, each Technology Center Preceptor will be assigned to staff one of the technology service units on campus to assist clients (faculty, students, or staff) with whatever projects they bring in. These students enroll in UNVR 397C.

What you need to do:

  • Make a list of the work you would like a preceptor or preceptors to do for you during the semester.
  • Identify a student or students who agree to work with you the first day of class.
  • Meet with the student/s to make sure everyone understands what you need.
  • Register your project by filling out the Faculty Project Registration form
  • Send the name/s of your STP/s to OSCR's Client Services Team by email. Have the student/s contact the same team to arrange to register for the course.
  • Attend one required faculty meeting with STP staff near the beginning of the semester (date and time TBA).
  • Fill out a contract with your STP/s, make sure one signed copy gets turned in to OSCR's Client Services Team by the deadline (see syllabus).
